How to Edit What You Carry

What people carry is a more honest routine than what they display. A bag has a weight limit and a schedule. The products that survive that limit are usually boring: lip balm, hand cream, sunscreen you will reapply, blotting paper if you need it, a cream for the moment the office air wins. Ten serums do not belong in a tote. They belong, if anywhere, on a shelf at home, and even there they are suspect.

Edit by the hour you are away. If you leave in the morning and return at night, you need protection and repair for dryness, not a second cleanse at your desk. If you train, you need a way to rinse sweat and a moisturizer that does not sting on damp skin, not a new acid in a locker. Makeup removal can wait until you are at a sink, where a balm works better than a wipe in a dark car.

A beautiful bag with products you do not touch is a still life. Once a month, take out anything you did not use. The pile on the table is the real guide. Replace it with nothing until the bag feels obvious. That is curation. The rest is carrying.
