A theme gives a look its story: a color, a decade, a reference. Cameras are less literary. They record whether the forehead and the cheek are the same color, whether texture is flaking, and whether the light is bouncing off dry patches. A strong theme on uneven skin looks like costume. A quiet face that is even looks finished.
Evenness is built before the theme. Sunscreen so pigment is not writing new patches. A routine that is not currently peeling you. Makeup that is pressed and blended rather than piled on to hide a problem you created this week. If you are choosing between a more interesting color and a calmer canvas, the canvas wins in every photograph you will still like next year.
This is not an argument for blank faces. It is an order of operations. Get the surface even enough that color can sit quietly. Then the theme has something to land on. Without that, the theme is doing the work of a correction, and it will look like effort.
